Michigan Man Sentenced for Threatening Trump and JD Vance Online

Michigan Man Sentenced for Threatening Trump and JD Vance Online

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A Michigan resident, aged 67, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for making violent threats against President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The unusual similarity in names has attracted considerable attention nationwide, given the seriousness of the threats towards prominent US leaders.

James Donald "JD" Vance Jr., hailing from Grand Rapids, was known online as "Diaperjdv" and used this alias to post explicit threats on the social media platform Bluesky earlier this year. Prosecutors emphasized that the messages were intentional and posed a real danger, reflecting the volatile nature of today’s political atmosphere.

Judge Deems Threats as Serious Violations

US Attorney Timothy VerHey announced the sentencing by District Judge Paul L. Maloney, who characterized the threats as "grievous conduct," necessitating imprisonment to deter similar actions in the future.

The threats, issued in March and April, targeted national leaders directly, warning of assassination if they entered his city.

On April 1, Vance stated:
"If Trump, Vance, or Musk ever come to my city again, they will leave it in a body bag."

He expressed a nihilistic view regarding his fate, expecting either to be killed by the Secret Service or to spend life behind bars, with indifference towards either outcome.

Another post from March 7 specifically threatened the president's eldest son, proclaiming:
"I will murder that stupid f-ker before he gets secret service protection."

Federal Felonies Admitted

Vance admitted guilt to two federal charges:

  • Threatening to kill or injure both the President and Vice President

  • Sending threatening communications across state lines

Each offense carries a maximum penalty of five years and a potential fine of $250,000.

Prosecutors noted that Vance’s threats were not spontaneous but rather premeditated and clearly aimed at high-level officials.

US Attorney's Strong Remarks

VerHey issued a firm statement, reiterating that the internet should foster dialogue, not intimidation. "When Vance declared his intent to kill our President and Vice President simply because he disagreed with them, he crossed an understood line," VerHey remarked. "He required punishment."

Worrying Pattern of Political Threats

This incident marks a growing concern; only weeks prior, another Michigan man, Richard James Spring, received an 18-month prison sentence and a fine for threatening to assassinate President Trump.

The increase in threats against political figures has alarmed law enforcement, particularly ahead of an upcoming election cycle.

Importance of This Case

This sentencing aligns with warnings from security agencies regarding rising domestic threats and politically motivated violence. The coincidental sharing of initials and middle names with the Vice President adds an unusual element to the case, attracting greater media scrutiny. Authorities believe that this punishment sends a critical message: online anonymity does not exempt individuals from accountability, especially in matters of national security.
