Mohammed Ben Sulayem has successfully secured a second four-year term as the President of the FIA, winning the election without any opposition. The voting occurred during the federation’s annual general meeting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. At 64, the Emirati and former rally driver was the only individual eligible for the presidency as other contenders failed to meet qualifying criteria. Ben Sulayem expressed gratitude for the strong backing from members, asserting the organization’s resilience in the face of numerous challenges in recent years.
American motorsport official Tim Mayer had initially planned to contest against Ben Sulayem but withdrew his candidacy in October, citing FIA regulations that barred his participation. Swiss-French driver Laura Villars also showed intent to run, even resorting to legal action to halt the electoral process. Nevertheless, a court in Paris ruled that the election should proceed as scheduled.
Villars’ legal representatives mentioned that the election might still undergo review or face cancellation in a future court session set for February. Both Mayer and Villars could not provide the necessary nominations from the various FIA global regions by the deadline of October 24. The candidate list included only one nominee from South America—Fabiana Ecclestone, who is affiliated with Ben Sulayem's team and married to former Formula One executive Bernie Ecclestone.
The FIA affirmed that the election adhered to its official guidelines, labeling the process as “robust and transparent.” It emphasized that the voting exemplified the organization's democratic principles and represented the choices of its global membership. With this victory, Ben Sulayem will retain leadership over the global motorsport organization amid ongoing reforms and governance matters. His re-election underscores the substantial support and influence he possesses within the federation despite recent legal disputes stemming from the election.
In the upcoming months, focus will be directed toward the February court hearing, which may challenge the election further. However, for now, Ben Sulayem continues to lead and is set to advance his vision for global motorsport. His leadership will be crucial in steering the FIA as it addresses significant decisions regarding racing regulations, safety protocols, and international collaboration within the motorsport community.
