Chisinau, Moldova — Tensions within Moldova’s Orthodox Christian community escalated on Wednesday when the country’s largest church rejected accusations of being a “Russian church.” This dispute has reignited old rivalries between two prominent Orthodox institutions, one affiliated with Moscow and the other with Bucharest.
In a nation where over 90% of the populace identifies as Orthodox Christian, believers are divided between the Moldova Metropolis, which is under the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Metropolis of Bessarabia, under the Romanian Orthodox Church. Both organizations lack complete ecclesiastical independence, complicating the religious and political landscape.
The conflict intensified when the Romanian-influenced Metropolis of Bessarabia accused the Moscow-connected church of “mass deception,” claiming it misleads its followers about its true alliances. In response, the Moldova Metropolis categorically denied being a pawn of the Russian Orthodox Church, affirming its spiritual autonomy and commitment to maintaining national religious cohesion.
Experts note that this issue mirrors broader geopolitical struggles as Moldova navigates its historical ties with both Russia and Romania. The Orthodox Church, a long-standing emblem of national identity in Moldova, now finds itself at the center of a discussion on national sovereignty and religious allegiance.
In spite of rising public scrutiny, both factions retain significant sway over portions of the Moldovan population. Analysts caution that without genuine reconciliation efforts, the divide could widen, posing a serious threat to community unity at a time when it is vital for Moldova’s future.
