Morocco has made its way to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final following a gripping semi-final showdown against Nigeria. The game, held on Wednesday in Rabat, concluded without goals after 120 intense minutes, pushing the result to a penalty shootout where Morocco emerged victorious with a score of 4–2.
Throughout the match, both sides had opportunities, but resilient defensive efforts and outstanding goalkeeping kept the score at bay. Morocco dominated possession, creating more chances, while Nigeria attempted to score but failed to find the back of the net.
In the penalty shootout, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was pivotal, saving two shots from Nigeria, granting Morocco a key edge. Penalty kicks by Achraf Hakimi, Neil El Aynaoui, and Eliesse Ben Seghir were successful, leading to a final shot by Youssef En-Nesyri that sparked wild celebrations among the fans.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Morocco, as they reach the AFCON final for the first time since 2004. They last claimed the trophy 50 years ago in 1976, and the energy from the home crowd surely fuels their hopes.
Although Nigeria fought valiantly, they found it challenging to penetrate Morocco's solid defense. They will vie for third place against Egypt, who lost in the other semi-final match to Senegal.
Looking ahead, Morocco will clash with Senegal in the final on Sunday. Senegal triumphed over Egypt 1–0 in their semi-final, setting the stage for an exhilarating final as both teams eye the coveted AFCON trophy. Senegal, the defending champion from 2021, faces a Morocco side searching for their first title.
The Moroccan victory exemplifies their skill and resilience, celebrated passionately by players and supporters alike. Both teams demonstrated tremendous effort and mutual respect during the match, laying a foundation for a thrilling finale to the tournament.
