Murthy Urges Longer Work Hours to Boost India’s Growth

Murthy Urges Longer Work Hours to Boost India’s Growth

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has sparked fresh debate by urging young Indians to embrace longer work hours if the country wants to match the pace of developed economies like China.

In a recent interview, Murthy highlighted China’s famous 9-9-6 culture—working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week—which fueled the rapid growth of tech giants such as Alibaba and Huawei. He said that if India is serious about accelerating economic growth and global competitiveness, citizens must adopt a similar level of discipline and commitment.

What is the 9-9-6 Work Culture?

The 9-9-6 model is an intense work schedule that demands 72 hours per week from employees. Supporters argue it helped China achieve unprecedented growth during its boom years, while critics warn it leads to burnout, stress, and health issues. In fact, China’s Supreme Court declared the system illegal in 2021, though reports suggest it still persists informally in some companies.

Murthy compared this to India’s current scenario, pointing out that China’s economy is almost six times the size of India’s. “We need sustained and focused effort across citizens, businesses, and leaders to catch up,” he said, emphasizing that productivity and hard work must take precedence before conversations on work-life balance.

The Debate in India

Murthy’s statements have reignited the discussion about work culture in India. Advocates say that adopting longer working hours could drive productivity and fast-track India’s economic ambitions. On the other hand, many argue that modern workplaces need to balance ambition with employee well-being, mental health, and efficiency, warning that overwork may backfire in the long term.

As India positions itself as a global tech and innovation hub, the challenge lies in finding a balance between hard work and sustainable growth, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of employee health or societal well-being.
