OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, is set to open its first office in India later this year, in New Delhi. The move highlights the company’s growing focus on India, which is its second-largest market by user numbers after the United States.
OpenAI has formally established a legal entity in India and has already started hiring a local team. The company said opening an office in India is an important step in its plan to make advanced AI more accessible to Indian users and to develop AI services tailored to the country’s needs.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, said, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across India and to build AI for India, and with India.”
The New Delhi office will serve as a hub for operations, research, customer support, and partnerships across India. It is expected to play a key role in managing the growing number of users, responding to local market needs, and addressing regulatory and legal challenges in the country.
India is a critical market for ChatGPT because of its nearly one billion internet users. According to OpenAI, the number of weekly active users in India has quadrupled over the past year, making it one of the fastest-growing markets for the AI platform. Students form the largest group of users, with many leveraging ChatGPT for learning, assignments, and research.
Recently, OpenAI launched its cheapest monthly plan in India at $4.60, aiming to make ChatGPT more affordable and accessible. This strategy is designed to attract new users and compete with rival AI services in the country.
OpenAI faces stiff competition in India. Google’s AI platform Gemini and AI startup Perplexity have introduced advanced AI plans that are free for many users. Despite this, ChatGPT remains popular due to its wide range of features, ease of use, and growing support from Microsoft, its major investor.
OpenAI’s expansion in India comes amid legal scrutiny. Some Indian news outlets and book publishers have accused the company of using their content without permission to train ChatGPT. OpenAI has denied any wrongdoing but is expected to address these legal and regulatory issues through its local operations.
India’s large and tech-savvy population makes it a strategic market for AI companies. Millions of students, professionals, and casual internet users are adopting AI tools for education, work, and daily tasks. By opening a local office, OpenAI aims to better understand user behavior, improve services, and build solutions that are culturally and linguistically relevant to Indian users.
The office will also allow OpenAI to collaborate with local companies, educational institutions, and developers, strengthening its presence in the country. Additionally, it will help the company comply with local regulations, support users in regional languages, and respond quickly to challenges and opportunities.
The New Delhi office is expected to become the backbone of OpenAI’s India operations. With a dedicated team on the ground, the company can better manage user growth, enhance AI capabilities, and expand partnerships. OpenAI’s focus on India signals its long-term commitment to the region and its importance in the global AI ecosystem.
India now joins a growing list of countries where OpenAI has a direct presence, marking a significant step in the company’s global expansion strategy. With the first office opening later this year, millions of Indian users can expect faster support, localized content, and AI tools designed specifically for their needs.
