Daniel Driscoll addressed recent shifts in the U.S. Army's leadership, commending former Chief of Staff Randy George, whose abrupt dismissal has sparked concerns among lawmakers. In a congressional hearing, Driscoll underscored the authority of civilian leaders at the Pentagon in selecting military chiefs.
The controversy emerged following Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's request for Gen. George to resign earlier this month. This decision, lacking a public rationale, fits within a trend of multiple high-ranking military changes under Hegseth's administration.
During the sessions, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers expressed apprehension regarding George's exit. Several representatives praised his contributions and inquired about the lack of clarity surrounding the decision. In response to the critiques, Driscoll asserted that the existing system permits civilian leadership to make ultimate appointments in the military.
Driscoll also emphasized his collaborative history with George, referencing their joint initiatives to enhance and future-proof the Army. He described George as a valued leader, revealing that he visited him post-departure to extend his support.
With George's exit, Christopher LaNeve is now serving as the acting Chief of Staff. Driscoll expressed assurance in LaNeve's capabilities, affirming that the Army is equipped with an experienced cadre of officers ready to assume critical roles.
Lawmakers like Tom Cole and Rosa DeLauro expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation, characterizing George's departure as a loss for the military. While acknowledging their viewpoints, they reiterated that personnel decisions rest with executive authority.
This incident underscores the ongoing friction between the Pentagon and Congress regarding military leadership choices, spotlighting broader issues of transparency and accountability within the defense sector.
