Peru's electoral authorities are under mounting pressure following significant delays and claims of irregularities in vote counting from the recent presidential election. This sluggish process has led to uncertainty regarding who will compete against conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori in the forthcoming runoff election scheduled for June.
The election took place earlier this week, but several logistical issues, including ballot distribution delays, prompted authorities to extend voting in various regions, particularly in the capital, Lima. As of now, no definitive second-place candidate has emerged, heightening political tensions throughout the nation.
The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reports that left-wing contender Roberto Sanchez and conservative Rafael Lopez Aliaga are neck-and-neck for second place. With more than 93 percent of votes counted, their margin is razor-thin, rendering the final outcome uncertain.
In the lead remains Keiko Fujimori, capturing about 17 percent of the votes, thus positioning her favorably for the upcoming round. However, according to electoral monitoring groups, it may take up to two weeks to finalize the results.
The delays stem in part from approximately 5 percent of the ballots requiring additional scrutiny due to inaccuracies or missing details. These votes will undergo review by a specialized electoral jury, which is expected to further hinder the counting process.
Criticism has escalated against ONPE chief Piero Corvetto, leading to calls for his resignation from business leaders and politicians who assert that the integrity of the electoral process is compromised. Some advocate for a new official to oversee the runoff vote to help mend public trust.
Fraud allegations have arisen, notably from supporters of Rafael Lopez Aliaga, but Corvetto has dismissed these claims. Adding fuel to the fire, Peru’s foremost electoral court has filed a criminal complaint against him for alleged breaches related to voting procedures.
Authorities are also investigating an occurrence where election materials from various polling stations were discovered abandoned on a Lima roadway. Officials have assured the public that the votes from these stations have been tallied, though the incident has spurred additional concerns.
Despite escalating tensions, observers from the European Union report no evidence of fraud in the electoral process. Nonetheless, the ongoing delays and political scrutiny contribute to rising uncertainty as Peru gears up for its critical presidential runoff.
