Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s newly announced peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Prime Minister said the plan provides a "viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace" for both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as for the wider West Asian region.
“We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to lasting peace, security, and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, and for the entire region,” PM Modi said in a statement shared on X. He further added that all sides should come together to support this initiative and work towards ending the violence.
The plan, agreed upon after talks between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, outlines a series of steps to bring an immediate halt to hostilities.
According to the proposal:
Hostilities would end immediately. Within 72 hours, Hamas would release all hostages it continues to hold—living or deceased. Currently, 48 hostages remain in Hamas custody, of which 20 are believed to be alive.
Israel would release prisoners in return. This includes 250 Palestinians serving life sentences, along with 1,700 detainees from Gaza, including all women and children. Additionally, Israel would hand over the bodies of 15 Palestinians for each body of a hostage returned.
Troop withdrawal under conditions. Israel would begin withdrawing troops from Gaza only after Hamas disarms. An international security force would then take control of the areas vacated by Israeli troops. However, Israel plans to maintain a “security perimeter presence,” a move that may face resistance from Hamas.
The plan further states that Hamas will not be part of Gaza’s future administration. All military infrastructure, including tunnels, would be dismantled. Hamas members willing to renounce violence would be granted amnesty, while those wishing to leave Gaza would be permitted to do so.
Under the agreement, humanitarian aid would be allowed to flow into Gaza in significant amounts, managed by neutral international organizations such as the Red Crescent. Egypt has also confirmed that it is training thousands of Palestinian police officers who could eventually take over security responsibilities in Gaza.
Crucially, the plan ensures that Palestinians will not be expelled from Gaza, with international support pledged for the reconstruction and rebuilding of the territory.
While the proposal has been welcomed by leaders such as PM Modi, its implementation could face challenges. Hamas has previously stated that it would only release hostages if Israel makes a clear commitment to end the war and fully withdraw from Gaza.
For now, the agreement marks one of the most ambitious diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region and restore stability after months of violence.
