Police Submit Report on Zara Qairina's Death Case

Police Submit Report on Zara Qairina's Death Case

Post by : Meena Ariff

Authorities have announced that the police have completed their investigation into the tragic death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah.

The investigation paper is being sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) today for further legal action, marking a critical step toward uncovering the truth behind Zara’s untimely death.

Police Confirm Report Is Ready

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said on Monday that the police have finished reviewing all aspects of the case. He confirmed that the final report, which includes information from the investigation, will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor.

“The investigation paper into the case has been completed, and it will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor today, insha-Allah,” he said.

According to sources, the Attorney-General’s Chambers is expected to release a public statement soon after reviewing the investigation.

Background of the Tragic Incident

The heartbreaking incident happened in the early hours of July 16, when Zara was found badly injured in a drain beneath her school’s dormitory. According to early reports, she had fallen from the third floor of the building.

Zara was rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, where she sadly passed away the next day, on July 17.

The news of her death shocked many in Malaysia, and even more questions arose after it was revealed that her body was buried without a post-mortem examination. This led to widespread concern among the public, who began to question whether all procedures had been followed properly.

60 Witnesses Interviewed

The case quickly gained national attention. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed on Saturday that the police had wrapped up their investigation. He added that the process had included statements from about 60 witnesses — including students, teachers, dormitory staff, and medical personnel.

These interviews were crucial in piecing together what happened on the night of Zara’s fall.

Mother Seeks Justice

After the burial, Zara’s mother became increasingly concerned about the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death. Since no autopsy had been done before the burial, she sought legal action to exhume the grave for a proper post-mortem examination.

Her mother’s request struck a chord with many parents and community members, who felt that every child deserves justice and every mysterious death must be explained with full transparency.

Lawyers representing the family have been working to gain approval for the exhumation, and it is believed that medical experts are standing by to conduct the autopsy once permitted.

A School Under Scrutiny

SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, where Zara was studying and staying in the dormitory, is now under close public and legal scrutiny. Parents and community members are asking questions about:

  • Dormitory safety
  • Supervision of students during nighttime
  • School management’s response to the incident
  • Why was no post-mortem ordered before the burial

Authorities have yet to release a full timeline or detailed account of what happened on the night of July 16. However, people close to the investigation say that Zara’s final movements have been partially reconstructed based on witness accounts and CCTV footage.

What Comes Next?

With the investigation paper now being reviewed by the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the next steps could include:

  • A press statement from the AGC outlining their findings
  • Possible legal charges or further investigations, depending on the AGC’s decision
  • A formal update to the public regarding the cause of death and any safety recommendations for schools

Public pressure remains strong, especially on social media, where hashtags calling for justice for Zara have been trending since the incident became known.

Many Malaysians believe that this case is not just about one child, but about ensuring that all children are safe in school dormitories and that families receive clear answers when tragedies happen.

Calls for Reform

Since the incident, parents’ groups and education activists have been calling on the government to:

  • Review boarding school safety protocols
  • Ensure immediate medical reviews and autopsies in suspicious deaths
  • Establish clear reporting procedures for serious school incidents
  • Provide better mental health support and counseling in schools

They argue that the system must change to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

Some have also asked for independent bodies to review serious incidents involving children in schools, saying that internal reviews may not always be enough.

A Nation Mourns

Zara’s story has touched hearts across the country. She was described by friends and teachers as a bright and respectful student, always smiling and helping others. Her sudden and mysterious death has left many feeling angry, confused, and deeply sad.

Her mother’s strength in fighting for answers has drawn support from parents, legal experts, and community leaders alike. There is hope that the truth will come out — not only to bring peace to the family but to set an example for better systems in the future.
