On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV concluded his visit to Cameroon, stressing the critical importance of “structures of solidarity” for underprivileged communities as he proceeded to Angola, the next stop on his four-nation African tour.
Crowd at Yaounde Mass
Leading a significant Mass at Yaounde Airport, the Pope was joined by thousands, including the 93-year-old President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest active head of state.
The event was filled with emotion and energy, with deep Catholic roots evident in Cameroon, where nearly a third of the population identifies with the faith. Notably, some attendees with disabilities were carried to the Mass in wheelbarrows by their loved ones, showcasing their devotion.
Message on Dignity and Accountability
In his homily, which he delivered in French, Pope Leo XIV underscored the significance of human dignity as a cornerstone for society. He urged that systems be established where individuals can both receive and provide help during crises—be they social, political, medical, or economic.
He called upon the elite to end the exploitation of natural resources and vulnerable populations for profit, advocating for equality. The Pope also motivated the youth in Cameroon to maintain hope amid prevailing disillusionment.
Beginning Angola Visit with Peace at Heart
After the Mass, Pope Leo XIV made his way to Luanda, set to meet with President Joao Lourenco and engage with government officials.
Angola, home to around 38 million citizens, achieved independence from Portugal in 1975 and subsequently entered a civil war that lasted 27 years, concluding in 2002. This conflict, exacerbated by Cold War rivalries, led to over half a million deaths.
Locals like Sergio Jose expressed hope that the Pope would impart messages of peace, reconciliation, and advice as elections approach.
Poverty Amidst Wealth: Angola’s Ongoing Challenges
Despite its status as one of Africa’s top oil and diamond producers, Angola struggles with stark inequalities. The World Bank reports that more than 30% of Angolans survive on under $2.15 daily as of 2023.
The Pope is anticipated to voice his concerns regarding corruption, which he has previously termed “chains” obstructing advancement.
Allegations of embezzling billions marred former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos’s nearly four-decade rule. His successor, President Lourenco, has made promises for anti-corruption measures, although skeptics point to their effectiveness and political motives.
Historical Significance and Muxima Visit
An integral part of the Pope’s Angola itinerary will be a visit to Muxima, a pivotal pilgrimage site located south of Luanda.
Built in the 16th century by Portuguese colonizers, the Church of Our Lady of Muxima serves as a testament to Angola’s role in the transatlantic slave trade—millions of enslaved Africans were shipped from its shores.
The first U.S.-born Pope, Leo XIV has personal ties to this narrative, with ancestry linked to both slaves and slave owners. His visit will include prayers at Muxima, honoring its deep spiritual and historical relevance.
