Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) emerged victorious in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup after a gripping penalty shootout against Flamengo. The match concluded with a 1-1 score after regulation and extra time, with Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov making four key saves to clinch a 2-1 win for PSG at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.
This victory adds to PSG's remarkable 2025 season, bringing the Intercontinental Cup into their trophy cabinet alongside Ligue 1, the French Cup, the Champions League, the European Super Cup, and the Trophy of Champions. Luis Enrique’s squad took an early lead in the 38th minute, as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted a goal following a swift counter-attack. Flamengo responded in the 62nd minute with a penalty conversion by Jorginho after Marquinhos fouled De Arrascaeta in the box.
The first half was dynamic, with PSG believing they scored through Fabian Ruiz, only for VAR to disallow the goal. Flamengo mounted pressure, forcing several saves from Safonov while PSG suffered the loss of Lee Kang-in due to a thigh injury. As extra time unfolded, both squads had opportunities, notably Dembele and Barcola for PSG, yet the score remained deadlocked, leading to the tense penalty shootout.
During the shootout, Safonov denied four penalties from Flamengo players Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo. PSG managed successful penalties from Vitinha and Nuno Mendes, despite misses from Dembele and Barcola, allowing the French club to lift the trophy. Midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery commended the team's performance against formidable opponents, emphasizing the need for PSG to maintain focus throughout the season.
