In a remarkable display, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) cemented their dominance in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 with a convincing victory by 61 runs against the Gujarat Giants, thus earning their playoff spot. Gautami Naik’s impressive half-century combined with a strong bowling showcase propelled RCB to its fifth successive win this season.
This triumph makes RCB only the second team, after the Mumbai Indians in 2023, to secure five consecutive victories in a single WPL season. Furthermore, it marks RCB’s highest margin of victory in the tournament's history.
RCB Bounces Back After Early Challenges
In their inaugural match of the season held at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, RCB faced an initial setback, slipping to 9 for 2 early on. Renuka Singh claimed Grace Harris in the opening over, followed by Georgia Voll, who was bowled trying to cut soon after.
However, Smriti Mandhana and Gautami Naik steadied the ship with a cautious rebuild. Mandhana countered with a couple of boundaries against Gujarat captain Ash Gardner, while Naik took her time to establish her rhythm. Together, they formed a vital 50-run partnership by the eighth over.
Eventually, Gardner returned to disrupt the partnership, dismissing Mandhana for the fourth time in WPL history.
Gautami Naik Takes Charge
Naik skillfully anchored the innings, achieving her maiden WPL half-century off 42 balls. Notably, she is the first uncapped Indian player to reach this milestone in WPL history. Richa Ghosh added pace to the innings with three sixes in her brisk 20-ball contribution, while Radha Yadav played a role in boosting the run total.
RCB closed their innings at 178 for 6, aided by some sloppy fielding from the Giants, who conceded 21 extras, the second-highest in WPL history.
Giants’ Chase Collapse
During the chase for 179, the Gujarat Giants experienced a faltering start. Sayali Satghare struck early, removing both openers in the same over: Beth Mooney for 3 and Sophie Devine for a duck. Lauren Bell also cleaned up Kanika Ahuja, leaving the Giants reeling at 5 for 3.
Anushka Sharma provided a momentary hold but was dismissed by Nadine de Klerk, and soon the Giants crumbled to 56 for 6.
Despite Ash Gardner's valiant half-century, hitting boundaries and a six off Bell, the required run rate remained daunting. Satghare returned to remove Gardner and concluded with three wickets, restricting the Giants to 117 for 8.
RCB Continues Their March Forward
RCB’s bowlers distributed the wickets systematically, showcasing a remarkable all-round effort. This victory ensured RCB’s path to the playoffs and solidified their place as one of the most formidable teams in WPL 2026.
