Thousands of mourners gathered in Manchester to pay their final respects to Ricky Hatton, the city’s beloved boxing legend, as the former world welterweight champion was laid to rest. Among those attending were former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, highlighting the wide admiration Hatton commanded both inside and outside the boxing ring.
Ricky Hatton, nicknamed “the Hitman,” was found dead at his home on September 14 at the age of 46. His unexpected passing left fans and the sporting community in shock, prompting a massive turnout for his funeral.
The funeral procession began at The Cheshire Cheese pub, Hatton’s local, and made its way over a two-hour journey to Manchester Cathedral. Along the route, thousands lined the streets, waving Manchester City flags and chanting, “There’s only one Ricky Hatton!” — a testament to his lifelong devotion to the football club and his enduring connection with the city.
Hatton’s body was carried in a sky blue casket, inscribed with “Blue Moon,” a tribute to both his famous walk-out song and his love for Manchester City. During his career, Hatton was known for wearing blue shorts in the ring, mirroring the team’s iconic colors.
Olympic boxing silver medallist Amir Khan, who traveled from Dubai to attend, described the loss as “a tough time for us all” and praised Hatton’s legacy. “Massive legacy, he was a fighter that we all looked up to,” Khan said outside Manchester Cathedral.
Ricky Hatton’s boxing career spanned 15 years, during which he claimed multiple world titles, including the WBA, IBO, and IBF light-welterweight championships, as well as the WBA welterweight world championship. After retiring in 2012, Hatton had planned a comeback later this year for a boxing event in Dubai, making his sudden death all the more tragic.
The funeral was a celebration of Hatton’s life, both as a champion in the ring and as a cherished figure in Manchester. Fans and fellow athletes remembered him not only for his skill and determination in boxing but also for his humility, warmth, and the joy he brought to his supporters.
Hatton’s passing leaves a deep void in the sporting world, but his achievements and his love for his city ensure that his memory will continue to inspire future generations.
