In 2023, India has been identified as the nation with the second-largest number of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, totaling approximately 138 million, as per a recent report from The Lancet. China leads with 152 million cases. CKD has escalated to become a significant global health threat, ranking ninth in causes of death, accounting for nearly 1.5 million lives lost last year.
Escalating Global Health Crisis
The study underscores CKD as a pressing issue across various regions. The highest prevalence was seen in North Africa and the Middle East at 18%, followed closely by South Asia at 16%, while both Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America surpassed 15%. Experts caution that regions experiencing healthcare disparities are particularly vulnerable to a heavier disease burden.
CKD's Deadly Association with Heart Conditions
CKD is more than a renal ailment; it significantly contributes to cardiovascular mortality. In 2023, nearly 12% of heart-related deaths globally were associated with kidney issues. CKD now ranks seventh among the leading causes of death from heart diseases, overtaking well-known factors like diabetes and obesity.
Key Contributors to the CKD Surge
The study pinpointed fourteen critical risk factors, with diabetes, hypertension, and obesity identified as the primary culprits for health deterioration. Additionally, dietary habits, notably insufficient fruit and vegetable intake alongside excessive sodium consumption, intensify risk levels.
Many newly diagnosed individuals are in the early stages of the disease, highlighting the necessity of regular screenings and preventive measures. Early management can decelerate disease development, mitigate heart-related complications, and delay the need for dialysis or transplantation, which are often in short supply in numerous areas.
Urgency of Prevention and Early Intervention
With CKD cases on the rise, preventive strategies, early detection, and accessible treatment are more vital than ever. Adopting healthier lifestyles, balanced eating habits, and improving healthcare accessibility could significantly alleviate the growing impacts on patients and families globally.
