Rivian Automotive is initiating a recall of 34,824 electric vehicles in the United States due to a concerning flaw in the driver’s seat belt system. This defect involves a compromised pretension cable, which poses the risk of failing to secure the driver adequately in the event of a collision, heightening the injury risk.
The affected vehicles primarily include certain 2022–2025 EDV models, as confirmed by Rivian in partnership with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Rivian’s strategy to tackle the issue consists of two key parts: an immediate over-the-air software update aimed at enhancing safety protocols and, if necessary, an inspection and potential replacement of the seat belt pretension assemblies.
Although NHTSA clarified that no injuries have been reported in connection to this defect, the possibility of seat belt malfunction during an accident led to this proactive recall. Owners are encouraged to promptly install the software update and arrange for inspections at authorized Rivian service centers.
This incident underscores the increasing complexities faced by electric vehicle manufacturers in ensuring the reliability of intricate systems where hardware and software must function flawlessly together. Experts suggest that Rivian's swift response, which includes both remote software upgrades and hands-on inspections, could mitigate risks while preserving customer confidence.
