Ternopil, Ukraine — November 19, 2025: In a tragic escalation, Russian missile and drone strikes in western Ukraine have resulted in at least 20 fatalities, including two children, with 66 more injured. This attack ranks among the most lethal in the region since the conflict intensified in February 2022. Officials reported that two residential buildings in Ternopil were the primary targets, leading to extensive damage and people trapped beneath debris.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia unleashed over 470 drones and 47 missiles across several western territories, causing what he termed "significant destruction." Areas such as Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk were also targeted, with drone strikes reported in three districts of Kharkiv, leaving over 30 individuals wounded.
Ternopil endured catastrophic damage. Footage shared by Zelensky revealed that one of the residential blocks crumbled between the third and ninth floors. Smoke billowed from windows, and small blazes continued to smolder outside the wrecked structure as rescue teams searched through the debris for survivors. Emergency sirens resonated throughout the city, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
In addition to the human toll, energy infrastructure, transportation networks, and civil facilities also suffered damage, leading to power outages in numerous cities. In Ivano-Frankivsk, two of the three injured victims were children, reflecting the indiscriminate nature of the offensive. Lviv's local leader confirmed that an energy facility in the region had been hit, disrupting electricity supplies.
These strikes follow reports of Ukraine using US-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles against targets in Russia, marking a troubling escalation in hostilities. Russia asserted that four missiles directed at Voronezh were intercepted by their air defense systems.
The attacks coincided with President Zelensky’s visit to Ankara, Turkey, where he seeks to rejuvenate US-led peace negotiations and meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Additionally, US envoy Steve Witkoff has been in discussions with Russian representative Kirill Dmitriev to explore a potential peace framework—though the Kremlin denies participation in the Ankara discussions.
Tensions surged further as a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace before returning, prompting the Romanian and German air forces to dispatch jets, and Poland temporarily closed two southeastern airports following the strikes in western Ukraine.
As Ukraine approaches the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2026, both countries remain at a stalemate regarding negotiations for peace. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated that Moscow's stance on a peace agreement remains unchanged since the framework outlined by President Vladimir Putin in 2024.
Experts caution that these lethal strikes and persistent drone incursions pose a rising threat to both civilians and infrastructure in western Ukraine. The international community continues to urge for restraint and heightened diplomatic efforts to stave off further humanitarian disasters.
With countless residents in Ternopil and surrounding areas grappling with the aftermath of these airstrikes, the human cost of this brutal conflict intensifies, underscoring the pressing need for conflict resolution and the safeguarding of civilians in Ukraine's embattled regions.
