Sana Mir Sparks Controversy Saying ‘Azad Kashmir’ During World Cup

Sana Mir Sparks Controversy Saying ‘Azad Kashmir’ During World Cup

Post by : Raman

Former Pakistan women’s cricket captain Sana Mir has sparked widespread controversy with her recent remarks while commentating during the Women’s ODI World Cup match between Bangladesh and Pakistan. During the live broadcast, she referred to cricketer Natalia Pervaiz as being from “Azad Kashmir” rather than “Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.” Initially, she simply said “Kashmir” before correcting herself to “Azad Kashmir,” which drew significant attention and backlash online.

The video of Mir’s commentary quickly went viral across social media platforms, with many users demanding immediate action. Netizens criticized her for using the term on a global stage and called on the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and ICC Chairman Jay Shah to take strict measures, including possibly banning her from future commentary roles. Many felt that such a statement could not be overlooked, emphasizing that there is no region officially recognized as “Azad Kashmir” in international cricket contexts.

The controversy unfolded after Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in the match held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Mir’s comments added fuel to the already tense atmosphere surrounding cricket interactions between the two countries.

This incident comes just days after members of the Pakistani men’s cricket team sparked similar uproar during the Asia Cup. Players Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan made gestures during India vs Pakistan matches that were widely interpreted on social media as allusions to military conflicts, including references to Operation Sindoor and the unverified claims of Pakistani fighter jet successes. Rauf was seen signaling “0-6” with his fingers, allegedly referencing Islamabad’s claims about downed Indian jets, while Farhan celebrated a half-century by mimicking an “AK-47” with his bat.

Together, these incidents have drawn renewed criticism of Pakistani players and commentators for making politically sensitive remarks and gestures during international cricket matches, with fans urging governing bodies to ensure such controversies are addressed swiftly to maintain sportsmanship and the spirit of the game.

This news underlines the sensitivity of cricket commentary and on-field behavior in Indo-Pak matches, where even minor slips can trigger large public debates and social media backlash.
