Serena Williams, the seven-time Grand Slam champion, is set to make a remarkable return to the Australian Open in 2026. The American tennis legend last played in the tournament in 2021, when she was knocked out in the second round by Italy’s Sara Errani. Despite competing in the Australian Open 21 times, Williams has never won the trophy, finishing as runner-up twice — once losing to her sister Serena in the 2003 final, and again in 2017.
At 45 years old, Serena Williams will become the oldest woman ever to compete in the main draw of the Australian Open. This will surpass the previous record held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she exited the tournament in 2015.
Williams shared her excitement about the return, saying, “I am excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer. I’ve had so many incredible memories there and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”
In addition to the Australian Open, Serena has accepted a wildcard entry for the Hobart International, a lead-up event scheduled to start on January 12. The tournament will also feature other major winners, including Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu.
Williams’ comeback is highly anticipated by tennis fans around the world as she continues to inspire many with her enduring passion and dedication to the sport. Her return also marks an important moment in tennis history, proving age is no barrier to competing at the highest level.
