The future of India’s cricket leadership has once again become a topic of debate. Over the past few days, reports have suggested that Shreyas Iyer could soon replace Rohit Sharma as India’s captain in the One Day International (ODI) format. These rumours quickly spread across newsrooms and social media, creating excitement among fans.
But is this really true? Or is it only speculation?
The reports came just after India announced its squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Many were surprised to see that Shreyas Iyer, one of the most consistent batters in recent years, was not part of the team. Soon after, some media outlets claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was planning to hand over the ODI captaincy to Iyer, as Rohit Sharma nears the end of his career.
This story caught the attention of cricket lovers because Iyer has been in excellent form. He was India’s top scorer in the Champions Trophy 2025, where he scored 243 runs in just five matches. He also had a brilliant IPL 2025 season with 604 runs, proving his value as a strong and reliable batter.
However, the BCCI was quick to dismiss these rumours. Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, spoke to the media and made it clear that no such talks had taken place.
“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” Saikia told Hindustan Times.
This short but strong statement showed that, at least for now, there is no official move to replace Rohit Sharma.
The question still remains: if Iyer is in such good form, why was he not selected for the Asia Cup?
India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained during the squad announcement. He said, “With regards to Shreyas, it’s not his fault, nor is it ours. You can only pick 15 players, and at the moment you’ll have to wait for his chance.”
This means that the decision was more about team balance and not about Iyer’s performance.
It is hard to ignore Iyer’s achievements:
Champions Trophy 2025: 243 runs in 5 matches, average 48.60.
IPL 2025: 604 runs in 17 innings, average 50.33, strike rate 175.07, six fifties.
T20 Internationals since last World Cup: 949 runs in 26 matches, average 49.94, strike rate 179.73, including a century and seven fifties.
These numbers clearly show that Iyer is not just a player in form but also a dependable performer across formats.
Rumours of captaincy changes are not new in Indian cricket. With a huge fan base and constant media focus, even the smallest move can turn into a headline. But leadership in cricket is not only about scoring runs. It is also about timing, experience, and long-term planning.
At the moment, Rohit Sharma continues to be a respected leader. While he may be closer to the end of his international journey, the BCCI has given no sign that a change is about to happen. Shreyas Iyer, with his current form and calm presence, certainly looks like a future leader. But for now, he must focus on continuing his strong performances and waiting for the right opportunity.
Shreyas Iyer’s journey is a reminder that in cricket, talent and hard work always get noticed, even if opportunities take time. The rumours of him becoming the next ODI captain may not be true today, but they show the faith that fans and experts have in his potential.
For now, Rohit Sharma remains India’s skipper, but the future could very well see Shreyas Iyer leading the team with the bat — and maybe one day, with the captain’s armband.
