Dubai – Sikandar Raza, the captain of Zimbabwe’s T20I team, is mourning the death of his younger brother, Muhammad Mahdi, who tragically passed away this week at the age of just 13.
In a heartfelt message, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) expressed its deep condolences to Raza and his bereaved family. The organization stated, “We extend our sincerest sympathies to Sikandar Raza and his family on the untimely loss of his dear younger brother, Muhammad Mahdi. He was born with haemophilia and faced significant health challenges, ultimately leading to his passing on 29 December 2025 in Harare.”
Muhammad Mahdi was laid to rest the following day at Warren Hills Cemetery. The ZC Board, management, players, and staff stand in solidarity with Raza during this painful period. “We pray for their strength and comfort, and may Muhammad Mahdi's soul find eternal peace,” added the statement.
In light of this sorrowful news, Sikandar Raza took to social media, posting a broken-heart emoji that conveyed his personal grief.
This tragedy strikes during a crucial juncture in Raza’s cricket career. The seasoned all-rounder recently demonstrated his skills with the Sharjah Warriorz in the ILT20 2025, where he scored 171 runs and captured 10 wickets over 10 matches, reinforcing his reputation as a dependable T20 player.
Despite the emotional burden, Raza is gearing up to captain Zimbabwe in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, set to kick off in February. His leadership will be vital as he takes the helm on this international platform.
