A concerning situation has arisen as an Indian Sikh woman went missing amidst a religious pilgrimage in Pakistan, sparking fears about the welfare of travelers abroad. Identified as Sarabjit Kaur, she is from the Kapurthala district in Punjab and was part of a sizable entourage of 1,923 Sikh devotees who made the journey under an agreed framework allowing visits to significant religious sites.
The group began their spiritual journey on November 4, crossing through the Attari border in Amritsar, with their destination set for Nankana Sahib in Pakistan to honor Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Parkash Parv. Spearheaded by Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj of Akal Takht Sahib, the 10-day pilgrimage included stops at various prominent gurudwaras.
While other members of the group returned to India on Thursday evening, Sarabjit Kaur's absence was flagged in both countries' immigration logs. Records indicate her name was not present in Pakistan's exit documentation nor in re-entry data for India.
Efforts by authorities in both nations are underway to locate her. The Indian mission in Pakistan is reportedly maintaining communication with local officials to accelerate the search and prioritize her safety.
This case emerges shortly after the Indian government permitted Sikh pilgrims to undertake the journey to Nankana Sahib, following an earlier denial over security issues. Annually, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) organizes these religious excursions, particularly during pivotal occasions like Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday.
As the search for Sarabjit Kaur intensifies, intelligence agencies are vigilantly observing the situation, underlining the difficulties in ensuring security during cross-border religious trips. Authorities are urging families and pilgrims to stay alert and report any irregularities during their travels.
