Political Shake-Up in South Sudan as VP Benjamin Bol Mel Is Dismissed

Amidst escalating political unrest, South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has officially dismissed Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel, who had been viewed as a possible successor. This decision strips Bol Mel of his military rank and removes him from the National Security Service (NSS), indicating a major reorganization within the government.

President Kiir also terminated the appointments of the central bank governor and the head of the revenue authority, both of whom were closely associated with Bol Mel. While the announcements were made public via state television, no specific rationale was given for the actions taken.

Appointed as vice president in February, Bol Mel’s ascension included becoming the first deputy chair of the SPLM party, a move interpreted as preparing him for a leadership role. He was subsequently promoted to general in the NSS, despite past US sanctions for alleged corruption in 2017, which were reiterated earlier this year. The US Treasury identified him as the “principal financial advisor” to President Kiir, a claim that Kiir's administration has refuted.

The removal of Bol Mel is anticipated to heighten political volatility in South Sudan, a nation rich in oil resources that gained independence in 2011 but has seen civil conflict erupt since 2013, following a rift between Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar. Although a power-sharing agreement in 2018 temporarily halted the violence, instability persists, and elections have faced repeated postponements.

Earlier this year, Machar himself was ousted as vice president and subsequently arrested, facing serious charges such as murder and treason, a move largely perceived as escalating tensions. Government sources claim that Machar's militia was responsible for a deadly attack on military personnel, while his representatives describe the accusations as a “political witch-hunt.”

With the removal of Bol Mel and ongoing instability, South Sudan now confronts crucial challenges to its fragile peace. Analysts caution that unless political disagreements are amicably settled and security conditions improve, the nation may be teetering on the edge of renewed conflict.
