A catastrophic incident in Saudi Arabia has resulted in the deaths of at least 42 Indian pilgrims, primarily from Hyderabad, after their bus, traveling from Mecca to Medina, collided with a diesel tanker near Mufrihat early Monday morning. Initial reports suggest that many passengers were asleep as the bus erupted in flames, leaving little opportunity for escape. Only one individual has been reported as a survivor, highlighting the tragic nature of the event.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his dismay over the horrible event, confirming that the Indian embassy in Riyadh and the consulate in Jeddah are fully engaged in providing support to the victims' families. He stated on X, “I am profoundly shocked at the accident involving Indian nationals in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are extending utmost support to the affected Indian nationals and their families. I extend my deepest condolences to the grieving families and pray for the swift recovery of those who were injured.”
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, representing the constituency of many victims, confirmed that 42 pilgrims from his area were on the bus. Owaisi is closely liaising with Abu Mathen George, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, to obtain further information. He has also reached out to two local travel agencies in Hyderabad for passenger details and is urging the Union Government to assist in returning the deceased to India while ensuring medical aid for the injured.
The Consulate General of India in Jeddah has labeled the event as a “tragic” accident, setting up a 24-hour control room to help families and coordinate with local officials. The devastating incident has sent shockwaves through communities in Hyderabad and across India, stress-testing the safety of pilgrims traveling abroad and the necessity for strong emergency preparedness.
This disastrous event raises concerns regarding road safety and regulatory oversight for long-distance pilgrim transport in Saudi Arabia. Rescue operations continue, and authorities are working to confirm the victims' identities, especially since many were asleep during the calamity and the bus was engulfed in flames.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and has instructed state officials to collaborate closely with embassy representatives to provide maximum support for the affected families. Meanwhile, citizens and authorities keep a vigilant eye on developments, ensuring that survivors receive prompt medical attention and that necessary assistance reaches bereaved families.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the human toll of accidents during religious pilgrimages and underscores the pressing need for enhanced safety measures for pilgrims traveling abroad.
