In a notable shift, Siddhant Awasthi, leader of Tesla's Cybertruck initiative, has declared his exit after more than eight years with the innovative carmaker. His departure coincides with ongoing leadership transitions and recent talent losses within the organization.
Awasthi's ascent at Tesla has been impressive. He began his career as a fresh graduate in 2018, having previously interned and contributed to a hyperloop school project. His rise was swift; within two years, he was appointed an engineering manager, and by 2021, he was in charge of the Cybertruck’s complex 48-volt architecture as a senior technical program manager. By late 2022, he became the head of the entire Cybertruck program, overseeing critical production enhancements and future improvements to the vehicle.
Despite a bold vision, the Cybertruck's market performance has been underwhelming. Tesla aimed for an annual output of 250,000 units but currently sells about 25,000 units each year. Analysts point to discrepancies between the initial promises during its 2019 launch and the reality of the 2023 model, citing decreased range, fewer features, and a higher price point as major factors hindering sales.
Last year, Awasthi also extended his influence by taking charge of the Model 3 program while still overseeing the Cybertruck. In his farewell, he reminisced on his journey at Tesla, celebrating significant milestones including his role in ramping up Model 3 production, contributing to Giga Shanghai, advancing new electronics, and working on the groundbreaking Cybertruck project, all before turning 30.
Tesla maintains a strategy of promoting talent internally, rarely hiring externally for senior leadership roles over the past five years. Awasthi's journey is a testament to this approach, although some analysts express concerns about whether this focus on internal promotion may lead to challenges in executing large-scale programs.
As Awasthi departs, Tesla faces ongoing hurdles in scaling production and meeting the high expectations it has set for its diverse vehicle lineup. His exit takes place during a period of significant organizational upheaval following last year’s layoffs and ongoing talent realignments across the company.
