On Tuesday, the fragile peace between Thailand and Cambodia along their border was disrupted when Thailand's military accused Cambodian forces of violating a recently brokered ceasefire.
The Thai army reported that mortar fire was directed into Ubon Ratchathani province early in the day, striking Thai territory and injuring one soldier. The affected soldier, who suffered shrapnel wounds, was being airlifted for medical assistance as the statement was issued.
This incident occurred just 10 days after both nations reached a ceasefire agreement on December 27, which was intended to halt intense fighting that had spanned weeks. The truce had sparked hopes of easing hostilities between the neighboring countries after a period of violent confrontations.
The multiyear border dispute, primarily grounded in historical claims and territory disagreements, has seen intermittent tensions. However, the clashes in December led to significant casualties, displacing nearly one million residents from both sides.
Tuesday's mortar attack has rekindled fears about the durability of the ceasefire accord, with the military of Thailand labeling the event a blatant breach, asserting that the shells originated from the Cambodian side.
As of now, Cambodia has not officially addressed the allegations made by Thailand, and there has been no confirmation from Phnom Penh at this reporting stage.
With the recent violent past still vivid in their memories, local residents near the border are once again filled with anxiety, as many have only just started to regain a sense of normalcy following weeks of unrest and displacement. This fresh accusation serves as a reminder of how quickly tensions can resurge in a region reliant on delicate agreements and shared restraint.
