The Toronto Police Service is reaching out to the public for assistance in identifying two suspects involved in a recent assault that took place in the Church-Wellesley Village, a prominent community hub in the area.
This incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, approximately at 12:22 a.m., near the intersection of Church Street and Alexander Street in Toronto. Police report that as the victim was walking in the vicinity, a vehicle passed by, and two occupants allegedly shouted a homophobic slur at him.
Following the slur, the suspects exited the vehicle, pursued the victim, and physically assaulted him before fleeing in a dark-colored sedan. Details regarding the victim’s condition have not been shared, but law enforcement is treating this matter with utmost seriousness.
The case is currently under investigation by the Hate Crime Unit, which is assessing the incident due to the derogatory language used prior to the assault. Officials emphasize the importance of these investigations, given that they involve targeted violence based on an individual's identity.
Descriptions have been released for the suspects: the first is identified as a white male, approximately six feet tall with a lean physique, dressed entirely in black, including a ski mask. The second suspect is also a white male, around five feet nine inches tall, similarly slender, and attired in black with a ski mask.
Authorities strongly encourage anyone who may have witnessed the events or possesses information, including video recordings from the vicinity, to step forward. Even seemingly minor details could significantly aid in the investigation and the identification of the suspects.
In response to the incident, Evan Solomon, Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, expressed his profound concern regarding the attack. He asserted that no individual should endure violence or hostility due to their identity and called for ongoing efforts to assuree safety and dignity for all communities.
The Church-Wellesley area, often referred to as “The Village,” stands as a symbol of inclusion and support for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. This disturbing incident has sparked concern about safety and highlights the need for increased awareness and action against hate crimes.
The investigation continues as police remain committed to locating the suspects.
