In a devastating incident, a Boeing 747 cargo plane traveling from Dubai to Hong Kong skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea early Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The aircraft, operated by Turkish airline ACT Airlines and temporarily leased by Emirates, was in the process of landing at Hong Kong International Airport around 4 a.m. when the accident transpired. Officials reported that the airplane struck a security vehicle positioned outside the airport's fencing before sliding into the water. Thankfully, there was no cargo onboard, and the crew members were unharmed.
The incident occurred at Hong Kong International Airport, recognized as the busiest cargo hub globally, sending ripples through the aviation industry. Video clips from the scene depicted the Boeing 747’s fuselage severely damaged and partially submerged, with the tail detached and emergency slides deployed. Rescue teams recovered the two deceased from the submerged security vehicle, identified as a 30-year-old man and a 41-year-old man, who died shortly after reaching the hospital. Authorities noted that the patrol car was outside its designated area and had no clearance to be on the runway.
Following the incident, the cargo plane’s north runway—part of an $18 billion expansion completed last year—was temporarily closed. While the other two runways remained active, the Airport Authority of Hong Kong reported that the aircraft unexpectedly veered left mid-runway and failed to respond to radio communication. An investigation has been launched, aiming to recover the aircraft's black box to assess the cause of the accident.
This tragic crash underscores the hazards associated with high-traffic cargo airports, as Hong Kong International Airport managed a staggering 4.9 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, securing its title as the world's busiest cargo facility according to Airports Council International. Experts in aviation highlight that ensuring runway safety, effective monitoring systems, and proper coordination between aircraft and ground vehicles are crucial to preventing incidents like this from occurring.
The focus of the investigation will extend to the Boeing 747's landing approach, mechanical state, and communication with air traffic control. Emirates Airlines assured that all crew members are safe, while airport representatives stressed the need for reviewing the operational procedures associated with the recently opened north runway. This incident marks one of the most significant accidents in the history of Hong Kong International Airport since its inception in 1998.
Rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing as authorities aim to secure the wreckage of the Boeing 747 and collect essential evidence. The international aviation community is actively awaiting updates on the investigation to ascertain how a standard cargo flight from Dubai resulted in such a tragic incident at one of the busiest cargo airports worldwide.
