Shooting Incident at Teotihuacan Claims Life of Canadian Tourist

Shooting Incident at Teotihuacan Claims Life of Canadian Tourist

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Tragedy struck at Mexico’s renowned Teotihuacan archaeological site when a shooting left one Canadian tourist dead and 13 other individuals injured, as per officials on Monday.

The horrific event unfolded at the Pyramid of the Moon, a key attraction within the ancient pre-Aztec city, located approximately 50 kilometers from Mexico City and frequently visited by tourists.

Authorities reported that the assailant opened fire on the tourists before turning the weapon on himself. The gunman’s identity and nationality have yet to be disclosed.

Among the injured are a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and child, a Brazilian tourist, and two American visitors, all of whom were transported to local hospitals for medical care.

Additionally, seven other tourists were hurt while attempting to escape the panic. This group included individuals from Russia, Colombia, Brazil, and four Americans, who received treatment on-site.

Swift response from security personnel, comprising police and the National Guard, followed the incident. Authorities recovered a gun, a knife, and unused ammunition from the scene, subsequently evacuating and sealing off the area.

Disturbing videos shared on social media depict tourists in chaos, scrambling for safety as shots rang out on the pyramid steps.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Teotihuacan attracts over 1.8 million visitors each year for its ancient pyramids. Although Mexico struggles with organized crime issues, armed confrontations at key archaeological sites are notably infrequent.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand labeled the shooting a “horrific act of gun violence.” In response, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered a thorough investigation and dispatched support teams to the location.

The motive for the attack remains unconfirmed as the investigation continues.
