A tragic incident unfolded on November 2, 2025, when an Indian Army soldier was fatally stabbed by a railway coach attendant during a dispute about a blanket and bedsheet on a train traveling through Rajasthan. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has intervened, calling for a thorough investigation and stringent measures against those involved.
The deceased, Jigar Chaudhary, was taking leave to visit his family in Sabarmati, Gujarat, aboard the 19224 Jammu Tawi–Sabarmati Express. After boarding the second non-AC sleeper coach at Firozpur station in Punjab, he requested a blanket and bedsheet from the attendant, Zubair Memon. Railway officials state that Memon, who was working through a contractor, reportedly denied the request, leading to a heated confrontation.
The situation escalated when Memon allegedly attacked Chaudhary with a knife, resulting in the soldier’s death. Upon reaching Bikaner, the Government Railway Police acted on a complaint from the train’s ticket examiner, leading to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR). The accused attendant was arrested, and the knife used in the stabbing was recovered; Memon has since been dismissed from railway duties.
In the wake of this incident, the NHRC has formally notified both the Chairman of the Railway Board and the Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), requesting a comprehensive report detailing Memon’s employment history, qualifications, and police vetting. The NHRC has asserted that the situation reflects severe human rights violations and has urged authorities to provide an action-taken report within a fortnight.
The NHRC has also voiced its commitment to achieving justice for the soldier, insisting on accountability for railway staff members and advocating for improved safety and oversight protocols within passenger services.
This tragic event has sparked serious concerns regarding the safety of passengers on Indian trains and the recruitment processes for railway staff, especially contractors. Ongoing investigations will be closely monitored by the NHRC to ensure accountability and justice for the victim.
