The Toronto Blue Jays are now just one victory away from ending their 32-year championship drought after a strong 6-1 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the 2025 MLB World Series on Wednesday night. The game, held at Dodger Stadium, saw rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage deliver a historic performance that left fans and analysts in awe.
Trey Yesavage, only 22 years old and making his first major league appearance this season, showcased incredible control and composure on the mound. The young pitcher recorded 12 strikeouts without allowing a single walk, setting a new rookie record for most strikeouts in a World Series game. He also became the first pitcher ever to achieve at least 12 strikeouts and zero walks in a Fall Classic contest.
Toronto wasted no time taking the lead, with Davis Schneider blasting a home run on the very first pitch of the game. Just two pitches later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with another powerful home run to left field. This early show of strength gave the Blue Jays an immediate 2-0 advantage and set the tone for the rest of the night.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who entered the series as favorites, once again struggled to generate offense. Enrique Hernandez hit a solo home run in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1, but that would be their only run of the night. The Dodgers have now managed just four runs in their last 29 innings, highlighting their difficulties against Toronto’s pitching staff.
Los Angeles star Shohei Ohtani, who had been dominant earlier in the series, failed to make an impact once again. He went 0-for-4 in Game 5 and is now 0-for-7 in the last two games after reaching base a record nine times in Game 3. His struggles added to the Dodgers’ frustration as the team looked to bounce back at home.
The Blue Jays continued to apply pressure through smart hitting and strong baserunning. In the fourth inning, a misplay by Dodgers right fielder Teoscar Hernandez allowed Daulton Varsho to turn a hit into a triple. Ernie Clement followed with a sacrifice fly to extend Toronto’s lead to 3-1. In the seventh, after Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell exited the game with two runners on base, a wild pitch and a Bo Bichette RBI single stretched the score to 5-1.
Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell had a challenging outing, giving up five runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. Despite striking out seven batters, Snell struggled with control, issuing four walks that gave Toronto additional scoring opportunities. His early mistakes proved costly as Toronto’s lineup capitalized effectively.
After Yesavage’s stellar seven-inning performance, Toronto’s bullpen ensured the win. Relievers Seranthony Dominguez and Jeff Hoffman each pitched a scoreless inning to close the game. Their precision and calm under pressure helped the Blue Jays maintain full control until the final out.
This victory gives the Blue Jays a 3-2 series lead, putting them just one win away from capturing their first World Series title since 1993. The final two games of the best-of-seven series will now shift to Toronto, giving the Blue Jays home-field advantage and a chance to celebrate their long-awaited triumph in front of their fans.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are now in a difficult position, needing to win both remaining games to claim the championship. Manager Dave Roberts will have to inspire his team to overcome recent offensive struggles and rediscover the spark that brought them this far. The next game on Friday will be critical for keeping their hopes alive.
Trey Yesavage’s performance has cemented his place in baseball history. His 12-strikeout masterpiece not only put the Blue Jays on the verge of victory but also showcased the arrival of a new star in Major League Baseball. If Toronto can secure one more win in the coming days, Yesavage’s Game 5 dominance will be remembered as the turning point in their championship journey.
