US President Donald Trump addressed business leaders at the US-Saudi Investment Forum on Wednesday, advocating for the inclusion of skilled immigrants in the workforce. This event featured the attendance of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
In his remarks, Trump stressed the importance of attracting highly trained foreign professionals to equip American workers with the advanced skills necessary for today’s high-tech manufacturing. He asserted that this approach aligns with his broader political goals and the “Make America Great Again” initiative.
Trump pointed out that modern factories require workers adept in producing items such as computer chips and intricate machinery. He highlighted a current deficit of trained workers in the US, noting the necessity for hands-on experience provided by seasoned professionals.
The President proposed that skilled immigrants could come to the US to train American labor before returning to their home countries, a suggestion that garnered applause from those present.
However, he acknowledged that some of his staunch supporters disagreed with this stance. Recently, he faced opposition from a prominent news host who argued that the US has sufficient skilled labor. Trump maintained that many American workers still require additional training to meet evolving industry standards.
His remarks were met with mixed reactions online, especially from those advocating for restrictions on work visas, like the H-1B program. Critics argue that more foreign workers may diminish job opportunities for American citizens.
Despite the backlash, Trump reiterated his position, stating that those against his proposal are patriotic and intelligent but may not fully grasp the dynamics of contemporary industry. He clarified that factories specializing in advanced technology require fully trained personnel to operate intricate equipment.
He cited a scenario involving a factory in Georgia, where numerous South Korean workers were briefly removed amid immigration enforcement. Trump intervened, advising against their removal due to the critical training they provided to American workers.
In conclusion, Trump asserted that allowing skilled immigrants for defined periods is essential for the US to remain competitive and foster advancements in domestic industries.
