Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he plans to put a 50% tax on products made in Brazil. This decision has increased tensions between the United States and Brazil. He shared this plan in his recent letter posted on social media.
Why is Trump Planning This Tax?
In his letter, Trump accused the Brazilian government of attacking US technology companies. He said Brazil was making it difficult for US tech firms to work freely. He also accused Brazil of doing a “witch hunt” against former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is currently facing court cases for allegedly trying to overturn the results of Brazil’s 2022 election. He is accused of being involved in planning to stay in power despite losing the election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Brazil’s Strong Reaction
Brazil’s current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, commonly known as Lula, replied to Trump on social media. Lula said if the US imposes a higher tax on Brazilian products, Brazil will do the same and increase taxes on American products. Lula also warned Trump not to interfere with Brazil’s court system. Earlier this week, Lula stated that “no one is above the law” and Brazil would not accept interference from any foreign leader or country.
What Else Did Trump Announce?
On the same day, Trump also said he will impose a 50% tax on copper imports starting from August 1. He said this tax is needed for national security reasons. Copper is used widely in industries like electronics, construction, and defence, so this decision could affect the prices of many items in the US.
More Tariff Letters Sent Globally
This week alone, Trump has sent 22 letters to countries around the world, including trade partners like Japan, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. In these letters, he announced new taxes on their goods that will start on August 1. Many of these plans were shared in April but were paused because financial markets became worried about their impact on global trade. Now Trump is bringing these tariff plans back.
Why is Brazil Targeted More Strongly?
Although Trump announced tariffs on many countries, his letter to Brazil was more serious and targeted. Earlier, he had planned a 10% tax on goods from Brazil, but now he wants it to be 50%, which is a massive increase. Unlike many countries, the US has a trade surplus with Brazil, meaning the US sells more to Brazil than it buys from it. Last year, the US sold many goods to Brazil and bought fewer items from them.
What Did Trump Say in the Letter?
In his letter, Trump said the 50% tax is necessary to correct the grave injustices of Brazil’s current government. He said he will ask the US Trade Representative to start an investigation called a 301 investigation into Brazil’s digital trade practices. This is a special legal process the US uses to impose taxes on countries it believes are treating US companies unfairly. In his first term, Trump used the same process when Brazil was planning to impose a tax on US technology companies.
Accusations Against Brazil’s Government
Trump also accused Brazil of stopping free elections and limiting the free speech rights of Americans. He said Brazil was censoring US social media platforms. Trump’s own company, Trump Media, which operates his Truth Social platform, is fighting against Brazilian court orders that sought to block some social media accounts.
Ban on Elon Musk’s Platform
Brazil had also banned Elon Musk’s platform X (formerly known as Twitter) for a short time. This was because X refused to block accounts that Brazil said were spreading false information about the 2022 election. Last month, Brazil’s top court said social media companies can be held responsible for the posts on their platforms, meaning they can be punished if harmful or false content is not removed.
Trump’s Support for Bolsonaro
Trump spoke about Jair Bolsonaro in his letter. He said he respects Bolsonaro greatly and called the trial against him “an international disgrace”. When both were presidents, they had a strong friendship. Bolsonaro visited Trump at the White House in 2019. Many people call Bolsonaro “the Trump of the Tropics” because they have similar political styles and views.
What is Bolsonaro’s Case?
Bolsonaro is facing court cases because in January 2023, after he lost the election to Lula, thousands of his supporters attacked government buildings in Brazil’s capital. This was an attempt to keep Bolsonaro in power. At that time, Bolsonaro was in the US and said he had nothing to do with the attacks. He has denied any involvement in the plot.
Earlier this week, Trump compared Bolsonaro’s court cases to his legal troubles. Trump said, “This is just an attack on a political opponent”. Bolsonaro thanked Trump for his support.
Trump Criticises BRICS Summit
Trump also criticised the recent BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. BRICS is a group of developing countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Trump called BRICS an “anti-American” group and said these countries will face an extra 10% tax on their products entering the US.
President Lula replied strongly to Trump’s threats. He said, “He needs to know that the world has changed. We don’t want an emperor.” Lula’s statement means Brazil wants equality and respect in global relations and will not accept any country trying to dominate it.
