Trump Supports Saudi Crown Prince, Overlooks Khashoggi Case

Trump Supports Saudi Crown Prince, Overlooks Khashoggi Case

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In a controversial stance, US President Donald Trump defended Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), asserting that the leader “knew nothing” about the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. His remarks, made during the Prince's visit to Washington, have reignited discussions on justice and the intricate US-Saudi relationship.

Trump labeled the incident as “a significant error,” reiterating Saudi claims that the country conducted “all the right steps” following the incident in its Istanbul consulate. Khashoggi, a journalist for the Washington Post and a critic of Saudi policies, was murdered and dismembered by Saudi operatives—an event that shocked the globe and strained relations between Saudi Arabia and the US.

Even in light of US intelligence findings released in 2021, which suggested that MBS likely approved the operation, Trump stood resolute in his defense of the Saudi leader. “Whether you support him or regret his actions, incidents occur,” Trump remarked about Khashoggi, who he described as “highly controversial” and emphasized that many were critical of the long-time journalist. He cautioned reporters against questioning the Crown Prince regarding the murder, urging them not to “embarrass our guest.”

A New Chapter in US-Saudi Relations

This visit signifies the Crown Prince’s first appearance at the White House in seven years, suggesting an effort to mend ties after prolonged diplomatic issues. Trump welcomed him with warmth, referring to the Prince as an “indispensable figure” in the Middle East’s future.

According to Trump, Saudi Arabia, under MBS’s leadership, has made “remarkable progress” in human rights, a viewpoint sharply contested by international watchdogs.

Human Rights Advocates Challenge Trump’s Comments

Human rights activists reacted strongly, decrying Trump's statements as “shameful” and “deeply concerning.” They argue that Saudi Arabia continues suppressing free speech, with journalists, dissenters, and human rights advocates facing imprisonment, lengthy sentences, and too often, severe executions.

Activists also spotlight a notable surge in executions in the Kingdom, many stemming from political reasons. Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, emphasized that Trump’s comments are intertwined with his “personal business dealings” with Saudi leaders.

“These remarks seek to whitewash a brutal assassination,” Weissman asserted, noting that downplaying Khashoggi’s murder communicates a “dangerous message” to authoritarian regimes worldwide.

Saudi Arabia Responds: ‘A Significant Error’

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman continues to deny any involvement in the killing. At their meeting in Washington, he expressed that Saudi Arabia undertook “all the right steps” following the incident, branding the murder as “painful” and “a significant error” committed by rogue elements.

Critics assert, however, that the Saudi investigation lacked transparency, failing to meet international accountability standards.

Significance of the Situation Now

This renewed debate is particularly relevant amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. With evolving alliances, global energy demands, and rising regional tensions, the partnership between Washington and Riyadh is crucial. Yet, Trump’s comments—contradicting his own intelligence agencies—pose serious questions:

  • Can the US uphold moral authority while ignoring egregious human rights violations?

  • Will this set a troubling precedent for future diplomatic negotiations?

  • Does this create deeper mistrust between Washington and its intelligence community?

As global pressures mount, the debate surrounding justice for Jamal Khashoggi's assassination remains unresolved. With Trump once again vocal in support of the Saudi Crown Prince, the issue is poised to persist as a focal point of international attention.
