Lexington, Nebraska: Tyson Foods, one of America’s largest meat processors, announced the closure of its Lexington beef plant, affecting around 3,200 employees. The decision comes as U.S. cattle supplies have plummeted to their lowest levels in nearly 75 years.
The plant, which has been a major hub for beef processing, will halt operations as meatpackers face soaring cattle costs. Analysts say this shortage is not a temporary glitch but a trend expected to persist over the next two years. “Meatpackers will have to pay steep prices for the limited supply of cattle,” industry sources noted, impacting both production and retail pricing.
Cattle inventories have been shrinking due to drought, high feed costs, and changing herd management practices. The shortage has pushed beef prices higher nationwide, affecting supermarkets, restaurants, and consumers alike. Tyson and other processors such as JBS USA are now navigating a market where securing cattle is becoming increasingly competitive and costly.
This closure underscores the ripple effect of agricultural supply shortages on employment and local economies. Lexington, home to the Tyson facility, now faces the challenge of supporting thousands of displaced workers while the broader beef industry adjusts to the tightening supply.
Experts warn that unless cattle herds rebound in the coming years, meatpackers will continue to operate under constrained conditions, driving up costs for both businesses and consumers.
