UK health authorities announced on Tuesday that ten individuals associated with the hantavirus case involving the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius will be relocated to Britain for safety isolation.
These individuals hail from the British overseas territories of Saint Helena and Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, as confirmed by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Officials specified that all ten had already been isolating without displaying any symptoms.
Health authorities emphasized that this transfer is solely precautionary, aimed at preventing any potential virus spread.
The outbreak has been traced back to the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius, which recently navigated through the South Atlantic and made stops at several remote islands.
Details from the cruise company’s website indicate that 32 passengers along with one crew member disembarked at Saint Helena, while two passengers required medical evacuation from Ascension Island.
The identities of the individuals being transferred to the UK have not yet been disclosed by the British government.
The UK Health Security Agency reassured that the overall risk to the public is very low, while contact tracing and health monitoring continue for individuals connected to the cruise ship.
