Malaysia’s ambition for a mixed doubles gold medal at the SEA Games Thailand 2025 took an unforeseen turn today, as the top seeds and world champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei faced a shocking semi-final defeat in Pathum Thani.
Considered strong contenders, the national duo fell short against fourth seeds Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat, losing 15-21, 16-21 in a match that lasted 44 minutes at Gymnasium 4 of Thammasat University Rangsit Campus.
Despite their impressive track record, Tang Jie and Ee Wei struggled with the level of pressure exerted by the home favorites. This defeat marks their first loss to Ruttanapak and Jhenicha, having previously outperformed them in three prior matches.
After the match, Ee Wei conveyed her disappointment, saying, “We had our strategies ready, but the Thai pair surprised us with their intensity, and managing that pressure was tough. We're still on a journey to reach our full potential and handling such critical scenarios is part of that learning curve.”
Tang Jie, who previously clinched gold in the mixed doubles at the 2021 SEA Games alongside Peck Yen Wei, expressed regret at missing the final. “It’s a heartbreaking loss. I’m still trying to figure out what went awry during this key match. We gave our all, yet it wasn't sufficient today,” he shared.
The Thai pair will now move forward to the final to contend for the gold, while Malaysia gears up for the bronze medal match—this outcome undoubtedly shakes the badminton landscape, considering the Malaysian duo's prestigious status.
This setback illustrates the intensifying competition within SEA Games badminton, where emerging talents are increasingly challenging established champions, contributing to a more unpredictable tournament. For Malaysia, it’s a valuable learning opportunity, highlighting the mental and tactical finesse required at elite levels.
