Washington, D.C. – During a call on Friday with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the pressing need for a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan. This conversation is taking place amid increasing global alarm over the ongoing conflict involving Sudan's national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, it has deteriorated into what the United Nations has identified as the world's largest humanitarian crisis. Millions of civilians in Sudan are grappling with severe shortages of essential resources like food, water, and medical aid, while ceaseless violence displaces communities and ravages vital infrastructure.
Rubio underscored the critical importance of stopping arms supplies to the RSF, reiterating a point made earlier in the week to enhance U.S. efforts aimed at conflict de-escalation. “A ceasefire is essential to ease the suffering of those impacted and facilitate humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable,” Rubio stated.
The dialogue with the UAE Foreign Minister also exemplifies Washington's approach of engaging regional partners to help mediate peace efforts in Sudan. The UAE plays a pivotal role in the region and is anticipated to help orchestrate international pressure on both the RSF and the Sudanese army to agree to a temporary halt in hostilities.
Humanitarian organizations are cautioning that should immediate intervention not occur, the crisis will likely intensify as winter draws near, complicating aid deliveries and heightening the risk of disease and famine among vulnerable groups. With international aid budgets stretched increasingly thin, precision and effective relief efforts become critically important.
“It’s imperative for the global community to respond rapidly to avert further loss of life and restore stability to Sudan,” Rubio remarked, emphasizing the need for collaborative action.
Despite ongoing appeals for dialogue, combat continues across multiple fronts in Sudan, with civilians often in peril. Experts caution that an enduring conflict could destabilize neighboring nations and incite refugee crises.
As global attention remains focused on Sudan, efforts are now directed towards diplomatic avenues and coordinated international initiatives aimed at securing a humanitarian ceasefire that could potentially save countless lives.
