U.S. Deputy Secretary Landau Calls Iraqi Ambassador for Urgent Discussions

U.S. Deputy Secretary Landau Calls Iraqi Ambassador for Urgent Discussions

Post by : Shweta

Christopher Landau, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, convened Iraq’s Ambassador Nizar Khirullah for an urgent discussion in Washington. This meeting addresses a spike in assaults targeting American individuals and facilities within Iraq, amidst escalating tensions related to Iran-backed militia groups.

During their dialogue, U.S. officials expressed profound concern over numerous “egregious terrorist actions,” notably an ambush on American diplomats in Baghdad on April 8. Reports underline that these events are part of a larger trend of violence recently affecting hundreds of U.S. citizens, diplomatic missions, and commercial entities. It has also had repercussions on Iraq's neighboring regions and its civilian population, including in Kurdistan.

While acknowledging the Iraqi Security Forces' attempts to counter such aggressions, Deputy Secretary Landau expressed frustration with the Iraqi government’s failure to effectively mitigate these threats. He indicated that elements tied to Iraq’s governance apparatus continue providing support—politically, financially, and operationally—to these militia factions, which has strained U.S.-Iraq relations.

Landau asserted that continued assaults on U.S. assets will not be tolerated and called on the Iraqi government to take prompt and decisive action to disband Iran-aligned militias operating within its territory. The message was clear: Iraq must act resolutely to safeguard diplomatic missions and restore security.

This situation underscores the increasing pressure on U.S.-Iraq relations as security issues and militia activities continue to disrupt diplomacy and regional harmony. The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding its personnel and ensuring security in the area, while urging the Iraqi authorities for enhanced collaboration.
