In a stunning turn of events at the Shanghai Masters, world number 204 Valentin Vacherot defeated Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday to reach the final. The qualifier became the lowest-ranked player to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final since the series began in 1990.
Vacherot, from Monaco, troubled Djokovic with precise drop shots and long, punishing rallies throughout the match. Djokovic, the fourth seed, appeared to struggle physically and took medical timeouts in both sets. Despite breaking Vacherot in the opening game, the 26-year-old quickly responded with a break of his own and gained a 4-3 lead in the first set, prompting Djokovic’s first medical timeout. Vacherot then dominated the remaining games to seal the first set.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Djokovic managed to hold his serve in a 12-minute first game but ultimately lost his serve following a double fault at 5-4, giving Vacherot the match.
“This is just crazy. Just standing on the other side of the court against Djokovic was an unbelievable experience,” Vacherot said after the match.
Djokovic praised Vacherot’s performance and attitude, saying, “Valentin played an amazing tournament. He deserved this win. I wish him all the best in the final.”
With this victory, Vacherot also made history as the first player from Monaco to reach an ATP tour final in the Open Era. His cousin, Arthur Rinderknech, is set to face 16th seed Daniil Medvedev later in the tournament.
