Venezuela has announced the closure of its embassy in Norway following the awarding of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. President Nicolas Maduro said the decision is part of an internal “reorganisation” of Venezuela’s diplomatic missions. In addition to Norway, Venezuela will also close its embassy in Australia, citing the country’s “geopolitical principles” focused on peace and regional integration.
Maria Corina Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in recognition of her work to promote democracy in Venezuela. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee appointed by Norway’s parliament and operates independently of the Norwegian government’s foreign policy. Maduro’s decision to close the embassy signals a sharp change in Venezuela’s diplomatic relationship with Norway, a country that has historically acted as a mediator in negotiations between the Maduro government and the opposition.
Between 2019 and 2024, Norway facilitated on-and-off talks between Venezuela’s government and opposition groups, including efforts that led to the Barbados Agreement. However, the agreement ultimately failed, and Maduro went on to hold the 2024 presidential election, which was widely criticized internationally as fraudulent. Since then, Venezuela has experienced increasing international isolation, particularly regarding diplomatic relations with Western countries.
The embassy closures in Norway and Australia mark a significant step in Caracas’ foreign policy shift. Maduro’s administration also announced plans to open new diplomatic missions in Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso, aimed at strengthening Venezuela’s ties with nations in the Global South. These changes reflect Venezuela’s strategic pivot away from traditional Western-aligned nations and toward alternative international partnerships.
This development comes at a time when Venezuela’s internal political tensions remain high, and the international community continues to monitor the country’s democratic processes closely. The closure of the embassy in Oslo may limit direct diplomatic engagement with Norway, which has historically played a critical role in peace talks and conflict resolution between the Venezuelan government and opposition parties.
