Vietnam will soon take a big step to protect the environment. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has confirmed that Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV) will join its special programme to reduce pollution from flights.
This programme is called CORSIA, which stands for Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
Vietnam officially registered for CORSIA on 30 June.
The programme will start for Vietnam in its voluntary phase from 1 January 2026.
CORSIA was started by ICAO to make sure that international flights do not increase their carbon emissions beyond the 2020 level. Under this plan, countries that join have to keep a close check on how much carbon dioxide (CO2) their international flights release into the air. They also need to report these numbers and then offset them. This means they will buy carbon credits to balance out the pollution they cause.
By joining CORSIA, Vietnam is showing that it wants to be responsible and support the world’s efforts to fight climate change. This move will help Vietnam’s aviation sector grow in a way that is friendly to the environment.
