Director Vikram Bhatt and his spouse Shwetambari Bhatt were taken into custody last week due to involvement in a significant fraud case, leading them to judicial custody. A court, on Tuesday, dismissed their request for interim medical bail, placing them back in custody. The couple is expected to stay in jail for the upcoming days while police compile a chargesheet in a ₹30 crore fraud case.
The Udaipur Court issued orders for Vikram and Shwetambari Bhatt to undergo seven days of police custody, linked to an IVF fraud case.
Background of the Fraud Allegations
The allegations were brought forth by entrepreneur Dr. Ajay Murdia, who recounted first meeting Dinesh Kataria at an event where Kataria discussed the creation of a biopic about Murdia's wife. On April 24, 2024, Kataria facilitated a meeting between Murdia and Vikram Bhatt in Mumbai to discuss the cinematic venture.
According to the FIR, Bhatt and his wife purportedly assured Dr. Murdia that with his investment of ₹7 crore, plus additional funding, they could produce four films for ₹47 crore, claiming potential returns of ₹100–200 crore.
However, Dr. Murdia alleged that the pair misappropriated over ₹30 crore by giving false promises concerning the films. Authorities noted that the couple is accused of utilizing fraudulent documents and invoices to misappropriate the funds.
Rejection of Medical Bail Request
Vikram and Shwetambari were first detained on December 7 and subsequently placed in judicial custody. On Tuesday, their attorney sought interim bail based on medical reasons, which the court denied. Udaipur DSP Suryaveer Singh confirmed that they will be transferred to Udaipur Central Jail, as per the court's ruling.
This situation has ignited broad discussions within the film community regarding fraudulent investments, and it has swiftly garnered attention on social media platforms, emphasizing the dangers tied to high-stakes film projects.
