Sri Lanka is grappling with one of the most catastrophic natural calamities in recent memory following the onslaught of Cyclone Ditwah, which delivered torrential rains and widespread flooding across the nation. The Disaster Management Centre reports a heartbreaking toll of 123 fatalities with approximately 130 individuals still unaccounted for. This weather nightmare has persisted throughout the week, wreaking havoc on residences, infrastructure, and vital services.
Sampath Kotuwegoda, the Director General, has stated that efforts for relief and rescue remain ongoing. Nearly 43,995 individuals have been relocated to government-operated welfare centers after their residences sustained severe damage or were entirely swept away. Numerous families found themselves in dire circumstances overnight as rising water levels left them little time to seek safety. Emergency teams comprising soldiers, police, and volunteers are currently assisting those in distress. Medical aid, food supplies, and immediate response are now the primary focus for officials.
While the cyclone has since moved away from Sri Lankan shores and is now approaching India, the widespread destruction it has caused lingers. Officials indicated that the detrimental effects of this weather system commenced earlier in the week, even prior to the cyclone's landfall on Wednesday. Rainfall levels recorded in various districts have been among the highest in recent years. Flooding and landslides continue to disrupt low-lying areas despite the rainfall beginning to subside.
As conditions worsened near the Kelani River, which traverses from Sri Lanka's central region to the Indian Ocean by Colombo, authorities had to issue evacuation notices for surrounding locales. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate on Friday night and seek refuge in temporary shelters. Although reports from Colombo and other regions suggest improving weather, parts of the north still experience light rain. The flood risk remains a pressing concern, as water levels could escalate if rain resumes.
In a swift response, India has come to Sri Lanka’s aid, dispatching a planeload of crucial supplies under Operation Sagar Bandhu. This shipment, which arrived early Saturday, included food, medical necessities, and other emergency provisions. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the lives lost and affirmed India’s readiness to extend further assistance if necessary, aiming to benefit thousands of families facing the aftermath of this calamity.
The Sri Lankan government has mobilized its army, navy, and air force nationwide to rescue those stranded and distribute relief. Helicopters are in use for airlifting families from inundated areas, while boats are deployed to those trapped in structures. DMC officials warn that this ongoing catastrophe may yield water levels surpassing those experienced in 2016, when 71 lives were lost due to extreme flooding.
The scale of destruction from this week’s incident marks it as the deadliest weather-related episode in Sri Lanka since June of last year, when 26 lives were lost during torrential rains. Sri Lanka also faced grave floods and landslides in December, leading to 17 fatalities. However, the most catastrophic flooding remains the 2003 disaster, which took 254 lives. Authorities are apprehensive that continuing rains could escalate this year’s casualties, as rescue operations are still searching for individuals reported missing.
Officials urge citizens to heed safety warnings, refrain from journeying through flooded areas, and evacuate to higher ground when necessary. The government pledges to maintain rescue operations until all impacted families receive necessary aid. The priority is on curtailing any further loss of life while assisting individuals in rebuilding their homes and communities.
