The mortal remains of 15 Indian nationals who died in the Vietnam boat tragedy arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday aboard Vietnam Airlines flight VN979.
After reaching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the bodies will be transported to their respective hometowns with the coordination of concerned state governments for the final rites.
The remains will be sent to different parts of India, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Coimbatore, where the victims’ families are waiting for their return.
The tragedy occurred on July 11 near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, when a tourist speedboat carrying 36 people capsized.
The boat had 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members onboard. The vessel, operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company, was travelling from Hon May Rut Islet to An Thoi Port when it overturned due to rough weather conditions.
Rescue operations were carried out soon after nearby tourist boats reached the accident site. Out of the 36 people onboard, 21 survived, while 15 Indian tourists lost their lives.
According to authorities, 10 victims were from Tamil Nadu, three were from Andhra Pradesh, and two were from Kerala.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City coordinated with Vietnamese authorities to complete identification, documentation, and other consular procedures for the deceased.
Officials also provided support to survivors and the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
Earlier on July 13, the Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that the bodies of the 15 Indian nationals had departed from Ho Chi Minh City on Vietnam Airlines flight VN979.
The embassy informed the concerned state governments and requested coordination for transporting the remains to their final destinations.
The Embassy and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City also thanked authorities of the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang Province, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other agencies for their assistance after the tragedy.
The Indian mission also provided an update on the only critically injured Indian survivor.
The survivor successfully underwent a medical procedure and was later shifted from Phu Quoc to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further medical care.
