Heavy Rains Kill One in South Korea as Philippines Floods Worsen

Heavy Rains Kill One in South Korea as Philippines Floods Worsen

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Torrential rains have battered southern South Korea since Saturday, causing a landslide, widespread flooding, power outages and evacuations, officials said Monday.

According to a report from South Korea’s Interior and Safety Ministry, one person was killed in a landslide in the southern city of Geoje on Monday. The landslide struck an apartment building, raising concerns about further damage as heavy rain continued across the region.

Four other people were injured in rain-related incidents. Two injuries were reported in Geoje, while two others occurred in nearby cities.

The severe weather has also forced residents to leave their homes. Around 390 people were evacuated to safer locations as authorities responded to flooding, landslides and other rain-related risks.

The ministry also reported power disruptions affecting approximately 3,580 homes in areas hit by the heavy rainfall.

Heavy Rain Creates Flood and Landslide Risks

South Korea has experienced persistent heavy rainfall across its southern regions since Saturday. Authorities have warned residents in affected areas to remain alert as saturated ground increases the possibility of additional landslides and flooding.

Emergency teams have been monitoring vulnerable areas and responding to incidents caused by the ongoing monsoon conditions.

Philippines Faces Widespread Flooding

The severe weather has also affected the Philippines, where heavy monsoon rains flooded major roads in Metro Manila and around a dozen provinces early Monday.

Floodwater caused major traffic disruptions across densely populated areas of metropolitan Manila. In response to the worsening weather conditions, the Philippine government ordered the suspension of government work and cancelled classes at all levels starting at noon.

Schools were also advised to shift to online learning where possible.

Thousands Affected by Weeks of Monsoon Rain

The Philippines has been dealing with intermittent monsoon rains for nearly three weeks. The situation was further worsened by a storm that struck the northern island region of Luzon about two weeks ago.

According to the Office of Civil Defense, the prolonged bad weather has affected around 5 million people across the country.

At least 23 people have died, with most deaths linked to landslides and flooding. Nearly 25,000 people remained in government emergency shelters on Monday, particularly in several northern provinces.

Baguio Landslide Among Deadliest Incidents

One of the worst incidents occurred on August 9 in the northern mountain resort city of Baguio.

A landslide buried homes while residents were sleeping, killing 10 people, including children, according to officials. The landslide sent mud, rocks and other debris down a mountainside and buried houses in the area.

Rescue workers managed to pull three people alive from the debris, although they suffered injuries.

The continuing monsoon rains have increased the risk of additional landslides and flooding, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas
