At least 15 Indian nationals lost their lives after a tourist boat carrying several passengers overturned near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam on Saturday, according to state media. Rescue operations are continuing as local authorities work to determine the full details of the incident.
The boat had a total of 36 people on board. According to local media reports, the passengers included 32 Indian tourists, three crew members, and one attendant.
The vessel reportedly capsized shortly after departing Hon May Rut Ngoai Island on its way to An Thoi Port. Reports said the boat encountered rough seas and strong winds, causing it to overturn.
All passengers and crew members fell into the water after the accident.
State media reported that 21 people were rescued and taken to hospital. Among them, two people remain in critical condition.
Search and rescue teams continue to operate in the area while local authorities work to confirm the complete details of the incident.
The Indian Embassy shared an update on X, saying: "In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing."
The embassy added that local authorities are continuing efforts to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
To assist affected tourists and their families, the Indian mission has established emergency control rooms at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy of India in Hanoi.

The Indian mission said both control rooms are available to provide information, assistance, and support related to the incident.
Andhra Pradesh Minister for Human Resources Development Nara Lokesh spoke with senior officials following reports of the accident and sought updates from AP Bhavan officials in New Delhi and state government authorities.
He requested information regarding reports that tourists from Andhra Pradesh may have been among those involved in the boat accident. Officials indicated that a group of tourists from the state, who were on a leisure trip, may have been affected.
Lokesh instructed officials to coordinate with the Central Government to ensure that all possible assistance is extended to the affected individuals and their families.
Authorities in Vietnam continue search and rescue operations while officials verify the identities of those involved and gather further details about the incident. The Indian mission remains in contact with local authorities and has assured support for the affected families.
