Leh (Ladakh), November 17, 2025 — Residents of Leh awoke to an unexpected tremor early Sunday as a mild earthquake registered at 3.7 on the Richter scale in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed this seismic event, stating it struck at 03:15 am IST at a shallow depth of 10 km, an intensity typically felt across surrounding areas.
As detailed in the NCS report, the epicenter coordinates were found at latitude 36.64°N and longitude 75.29°E, situating it within the active Himalayan seismic zone. The agency communicated via X (formerly Twitter):
“EQ of M: 3.7, On: 17/11/2025 03:15:33 IST… Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.”
Despite its mild magnitude, many residents reported feeling brief shaking, particularly in taller buildings. Since the quake occurred during pre-dawn hours, it caught most people off guard. Local officials later confirmed that there were no incidents of damage, injuries, or disruption to essential services.
The seismic belt of Ladakh frequently experiences low to moderate earthquakes due to the ongoing tectonic shifts between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Experts point out that shallow quakes—regardless of their moderate strength—can be distinctly felt due to their proximity to the earth’s surface.
While the quake itself was not significant, it serves as a crucial reminder of the region's susceptibility to seismic activity. This year, Ladakh has experienced a series of minor quakes that have led to discussions about emergency preparedness, building safety, and community awareness—particularly during winter months when cold temperatures hinder responsive actions.
The NCS, along with local authorities, is actively monitoring the scenario for possible aftershocks. Residents are advised to stay aware but remain calm, as minor earthquakes are commonplace in the area. Safety guidelines detailing actions to take during and after quakes will be distributed soon.
As tectonic activity continues within the Himalayas, specialists stress the importance of updated building practices, emergency preparedness training, and community outreach. Mild quakes like this one can highlight vulnerabilities in safety measures and underscore the need for readiness among locals.
At present, life in Leh has resumed its normal rhythm, with Sunday's quake serving as a critical yet gentle reminder that this scenic mountain town is part of one of the planet's most active seismic areas.
