Xinjiang, China – November 6, 2025: A moderate earthquake registering 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in Xinjiang earlier today. Seismological reports place the event at a depth of 220 kilometres; authorities say there are no reports of casualties or structural damage at this time.
The tremor comes after a 4.9-magnitude shock on October 26, which had a focal depth of about 130 km. Over recent months, Xinjiang and other parts of China have experienced a string of moderate quakes, underscoring persistent seismic activity across the region.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) continues to track these events. Notable recent readings include a 4.2-magnitude quake on September 8 at roughly 50 km depth and a 4.1-magnitude event on September 7 at a shallow 10 km depth. Specialists caution that earthquakes closer to the surface typically transmit stronger shaking and therefore carry higher risk.
China’s location at the junction of the circum-Pacific and circum-Indian seismic belts contributes to its high earthquake exposure. Interactions among the Pacific, Indian and Philippine Sea plates have produced extensive fracture zones that run through much of the country.
The human toll from earthquakes in China has been substantial. Historical records show more than 800 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater since the early 20th century. Since 1900, earthquake-related fatalities in China exceed 550,000, representing a significant share of global earthquake deaths. Post-1949, over 100 destructive quakes have claimed more than 270,000 lives and razed millions of homes.
Although the latest 4.7-magnitude event has not caused injuries or damage, experts stress that preparedness and continuous monitoring remain essential. Robust surveillance of seismic activity is key to reducing risks to life and property in China’s earthquake-prone regions.
