Powerful 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Papua, Indonesia Without Tsunami Risk

Powerful 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Papua, Indonesia Without Tsunami Risk

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A significant earthquake measuring 6.7 in magnitude jolted Papua province, Indonesia, on Thursday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Occurring at a depth of 70 kilometers (about 43.5 miles), this tremor is classified as moderately deep.

The epicenter was situated roughly 200 kilometers from Abepura, a city with a populace exceeding 62,000. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, although emergency services remain on standby.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued in the aftermath of the earthquake. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the area, given Papua’s susceptibility to seismic events which are common along the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” known for a high incidence of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Residents of Abepura reported experiencing noticeable shaking, urging local officials to advise the community to stay alert and adhere to emergency protocols. Suggestions for earthquake preparedness include evaluating the structural integrity of buildings and ensuring emergency supplies are on hand.

As Indonesia frequently faces earthquakes, the government has established active disaster response units in most at-risk areas. While this earthquake posed no immediate tsunami threat, local authorities have urged vigilance in the following hours and days.

The USGS will continue to provide updates regarding any aftershocks and their potential effects in the region. It is advised for both residents and travelers to remain informed through official updates and heed local authority guidance.
